Since its arrival in the auto world in model year 2004, the Mazda3 has been one of the top performers in the compact car class. Currently in its third generation, the Mazda3 continues to improve on performance, safety, and has remained at the forefront of automobile technology. For three years straight, the Mazda3 has been named a “Ten Best” by Car and Driver, and “Ten Best Sedans Under $25,000” by Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com).
The 2016 Mazda3 did receive some updates to ensure it stays at the top of the compact car class. The biggest updates are the G-Vecoring Control system which reduces and increases the automobile’s torque based on the driver’s steering, the base model is now the Mazda3 i Sport Trim, and rear-view cameras come standard on all models of the Mazda3. The 2016 Mazda3 also received some exterior updates, with a remodeled grille and headlights that gives a sporty, unique look to a classic design.
While many cars in the compact class do not deliver on performance, that’s not the case with the 2016 Mazda3. The Mazda3 base model comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder SKYACTIV®-engine that is available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The base model gets a solid 155 horsepower and great gas mileage at approximately 29/40 mpg (city/highway) depending on the body style and transmission. For drivers wanting a bit more power, the 2016 Mazda3 is available in a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-engine that provides 184 horsepower. You won’t have to sacrifice gas mileage either, as it still gets approximately 26/36 mpg.
The makers and designers know that more time is spent in our cars than ever, and with that in mind, the Mazda3 is comfortable and has a good amount of storage space. The Mazda3 comfortably seats five, but the back seat also does a 60/40 split fold-down that is great for space.
The cloth seats that are standard are comfortable and well-made, though the Touring is available in Leatherette, and the Grand Touring model is available in leather. The driver’s seat has 6-way manual adjustment ability and heated front seats and a moonroof is available as options.
The 2016 Mazda3 comes standard with great technology, including the MAZDA CONNECT™ Infotainment System. It has a 7-inch touch-screen display with a 6-speaker audio system and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming ability. Available in the Touring and Grand Touring trims are a 9-speaker Bose audio system and navigation. You’ll also find dual-zone climate control with pollen filter, power locks and windows, cruise control, and keyless entry.
With its 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2016 Mazda3 comes equipped with excellent safety features. A rearview backup camera comes standard on all trims, in addition to a full array of airbags and stability and traction control. The Touring model includes blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the high-end Grand Touring model adds Smart City Brake Support.
