Mazda CX-30 vs. Subaru Crosstrek
Which Small SUV is the Right Fit for Indianapolis Drivers
Small SUVs with standard all-wheel drive make a lot of sense in a state with real winters, and two of the most popular ones come from Mazda and Subaru. One leans toward a sportier drive and a dressier cabin. The other leans toward ground clearance and cargo room. Here is how they stack up using each manufacturer’s own 2026 numbers.
- The 2026 Mazda CX-30 starts at $26,375 with 186 hp, standard i-Activ AWD, and an available 250 hp turbo.
- Subaru’s 2026 Crosstrek starts at $26,995 with 180 hp, standard Symmetrical AWD, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and a 1,500-pound tow rating.
- Subaru posts better EPA mileage and more folded cargo space, while Mazda counters with more power and a conventional six-speed automatic.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Subaru Crosstrek on Power and Fuel Economy
Both SUVs put a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and all-wheel drive in every trim, so you never pay extra for traction. Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.5 makes 186 hp and 186 lb-ft on regular gas through a six-speed automatic. Subaru’s 2.5-liter boxer makes 180 hp and 178 lb-ft through a CVT.
The gap opens at the top of each lineup. Mazda’s 2.5 Turbo, found on the Turbo Aire Edition and Turbo Premium Plus, pushes output to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel. That’s the kind of torque that makes merging onto I-70 at Shadeland feel easy. Subaru’s answer for 2026 is a new Crosstrek Hybrid with 194 hp combined.
EPA ratings put the non-turbo CX-30 at 24 city, 31 highway, and 27 combined mpg, with the turbo at 22, 30, and 25. The gas Crosstrek is rated at 26, 33, and 29, and the Wilderness lands at 24, 29, and 26 because of its taller tires and gearing. For a daily loop around I-465, the Subaru saves a little at the pump. Subaru has already announced the 2027 Crosstrek with the same $26,995 start and the same engine, so these numbers should hold for a while.
Cabin, Cargo, and Tech for Everyday Indy Driving
Cargo is where these two trade wins. With the rear seat up, the CX-30 holds 20.2 cubic feet, and the Crosstrek holds 19.9. Fold the seat, and the Crosstrek jumps to 54.7 cubic feet against the Mazda’s 45.2. If you haul mulch from a garden center in Fishers or bikes out to the Monon Trail, that extra nine and a half cubic feet is real space.
At 173.0 inches, the Mazda is also 3.4 inches shorter, which you’ll notice when squeezing into a spot along Mass Ave or in Broad Ripple. Inside, the CX-30 has the nicer cabin of the two, with soft-touch surfaces and a layout that reads a class above its price. The Crosstrek’s cabin is built to take a beating, with rubbery cladding outside and hard-wearing fabric inside.
On tech, the CX-30 starts with an 8.8-inch display run by a console knob, and the Preferred trim and above get a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrive on the Select Sport. Subaru’s base Crosstrek uses dual 7.0-inch touchscreens, and the Premium and above step up to an 11.6-inch portrait screen with wireless phone mirroring. Both include adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking on every trim.
Ground Clearance, Towing, and Indiana Weather
Ground clearance favors the Subaru. The CX-30 sits at 8.0 inches, the standard Crosstrek at 8.7, and the Crosstrek Wilderness at 9.3. Either one clears a gravel road near Geist or a snowy driveway in Noblesville, and both AWD systems have a low-traction mode. Mazda calls its version Off-Road Traction Assist, while Subaru’s X-MODE adds Hill Descent Control, handy on the steep drop into Brown County State Park.
Towing is a clean win for Subaru. Mazda does not publish a tow rating for the CX-30 and points shoppers to the larger CX-5 instead. Crosstrek buyers get a 1,500-pound rating, and the Wilderness raises that to 3,500 pounds with an added transmission cooler. That’s enough for a small fishing boat headed to Eagle Creek Reservoir.
For cold mornings, the CX-30 adds heated front seats on the Select Sport and above, and a heated steering wheel on the 2.5 S Premium and Turbo Premium Plus. Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims include heated seats, and the Limited and Wilderness add a heated wheel.

Picking the Right Small SUV for Your Indianapolis Commute
Price is nearly a wash. Mazda’s sticker starts $620 lower, but its destination charge is $175 higher, so the two land about $445 apart before taxes. Want quicker steering, stronger engines, a conventional automatic, and a cabin that feels upscale? Pick the Mazda CX-30. Need maximum folded cargo, a bit more clearance, a tow rating, and a couple more mpg? The Crosstrek earns its spot. Drive them back to back before you decide, because the difference in feel is bigger than the spec sheet suggests.
